The power of the horns lower register

Mats Johansson's picture
Horn Playing

Hi!

My name is Mats Johansson, 19 years old, a horn student from sweden. Thanks for a fantastic homepage! A lot of intresting material here!

Since I myself is somewhat of a specialized low horn player, I got very interested in the concerto for Low Horn you (mr Turner) have written. But then the usual problem with contemporary music, where can i find the music for it? Is it published?
I would love to play, or at least give it a try!
Im trying to make my hornplaying friends understand the power of a good low register, but everybody is just aiming for the skyies.
The Neuling Bagatell worked quite fine! But I want more to play that's written specially for the lower register. Any sugestions for repertoire?

Take care!

Yes!

There aren't so many others in sweden named Mats, and playing the horn ;) Så det stämmer bra! Va kul att se dig här! Trodde inte det fanns svenskar som var hemma på Kerry Turner, framförallt inte folk man känner :P ! Sorry for the swedish!

Concerto for Low Horn

Hello Swedish folks! Nice to hear you all are looking at my website. I can speak and write a lot of languages, but swedish is unfortunately not one of them.

The Low Horn Concerto: This work is published by Editions BIM in Switzerland. There is a link to the publisher on this website. You can order it directly from them. If there is a problem, please let me know.

Many people have complained that the Bagatelle by Neuling is simply not musically challenging enough for them. One can certainly show off the low register for auditions, etc., but apparently one grows tired of the piece rather quickly. It has been suggested that my Concerto for Low Horn could one day be an alternative to the Neuling Bagatelle at auditions. It has already been discussed by several horn sections in Germany.

Whenever I need to get my low

Whenever I need to get my low register in shape for an upcoming project, I have developed a little trick that works beautifully. I find an interesting etude (often I use the Belloli etudes for this), play it through once, and then immediately afterwards play it again, an octave lower. Your embouchure has a chance to adjust to the lower tessatura while your brain feels the comfort of the normal range because it already knows the tune! You can try this with concertos or other solo pieces; indeed, it is useful to play orchestral excerpts at different pitches as a learning tool. I started doing this because I couldn't find etudes specifically for low horn that I found interesting.

However, if you are a fan of the Neuling Bagatelle, Hermann Neuling also wrote a book of low horn etudes entitled "30 Spezial-Etüden für tiefes Horn", published by Pro Musica Verlag in Leipzig.
