Range capabilities...

Horn Playing

I've been playing since the 6th Grade but I didn't really have any real instruction I moved to a town last year, where I have a private instructor. Where should my range be at the moment as a Sophomore in High School, because I feel inadequate at times, especially when I consider my choice to be a Band Director and how good my colleagues will likely be.

Thanks

Timothy

Range Capabilities

Hello Timothy,
When I was a sophomore, I learned and played the Schumann Adagio and Allegro. This work has quite a large range. It takes you up to top C and down to pedal A. And that is a good working range for any horn player your age. I also remember that the All-State audition material for the state of Texas was chosen from the Kling Etudes. These also usually have a range of around top C (some of them go up to B and Bb) and a pedal A (some of them go even lower). In fact, practicing those etudes would be a good way to increase your range. Now when I got into college, I encountered other horn players who were squeezing out high E and going down to super pedal E. And eventually you may want to aim for those notes. But not as a sophomore in high school. Good luck.

Which Country?

Hello fellow horn player,

Surely you must know that in several countries, particularly in Europe, the Alexander 103 is above all the preferred instrument. So it would be good to know which country you are referring to before I can answer your question. Off the cuff, it has been my experience that you should play in a style and manner that is true to yourself, especially with only two months to go before the audition.
