Siegfried (Long Call) - to break the "ring barrier" or not?
I found a great link to several on-line wma audio files (www.pizka.de). It has the same excerpt played by many of the greats such as Horner, Tuckwell, Farkas and Brain.
I took a few minutes and listened in awe as these masters played the passage in a wide variety of styles.
One thing that hit me was the range of colors and tone qualities that the various artists incorporated.
Then, I just had to wonder. As the various parts of this except hit the double fortes, many of the tones broke the "ring barrier" and took on a rather brassy edge. Is that the way this passage is meant to be played? Or is it just a style preference? Ex: Tuckwell vs. Horner at that link are very different...both beautiful!
Would love to hear some opinions on this!
