Scorpion strikes the IHS

Composition

Hello again,

Just wanted to post a brief report on the latest performance of Kerry's "Scorpion in the Sand," a work I commissioned this past year. I was graciously invited by host Skip Snead to perform at the International Horn Society's 37th annual Symposium in Alabama (going on this week). I performed two works: first, the "Legende" by Marcel Poot, and then the Scorpion. The Poot really helped set the mood, with its Arabic sound and jaunty rhythms. Kerry's work was played by cellist Carlton McCreery and pianist Bruce Murray (both longtime faculty at the Universtity of Alabama). They brought a fabulous amount of energy and enthusiasm, and the piece was warmly received (especially the drumming). Congrats, Kerry!

Also heard your 3rd Quartet before the big Alabama Symphony/Gail Williams etc. concert, played by the New England Conservatory horn quartet, all fine players. Finally, this past Monday my wife Tricia (Principal, Omaha Symphony) and yours truly played "Twas a Dark and Stormy Night" in Kerry's two horn/organ version to great applause from the audience. I was amazed that my private horn student even remembered the main theme a few days thereafter. Thanks for some great music, Kerry!

Thomas Jostlein
Omaha Symphony 3rd Horn (as of last week)

Scorpion Strikes the US

Congratulations Thomas on both the Scorpion performance and on winning the Omaha audition! Way to go! Kerry and I are both thankful to you, not only for your wonderful playing, but also for your enthusiastic promotion of Kerry's works. Perhaps we can find you someday in Omaha - any impression of that city will be better than my first and only, rolling into the Greyhound bus terminal around 4 in the morning for a transfer to Wisconsin...

I hope your move is going as smoothly as possibly and that you and Tricia really enjoy finally being together full time again in your new home.
