How to commission a work

If you are interested in commissioning a work by Kerry Turner, you may contact him at his e-mail address or telephone number (listed under Contacts.)

In the meantime, here is some information:

1) The composer charges $300 (USD) per minute of sounding music, for example, a ten-minute work would cost $3000. A multi-movement work which has 10 minutes of actual music would cost also $3000 (the silent breaks between movements do not count.)

2) These rates are always negotiable, and may vary according to the instrumentation. For example, the composer may ask a higher rate for a work written for symphony orchestra which demands more time.

3) The composer is interested in writing music for almost all combinations of instruments but possesses a limited knowledge of certain "fringe" instruments such as bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, pennywhistle, digeridoo, and the like.

4) After having commissioned Mr. Turner and settled on a rate and the instrumentation, the composer will draw up a contract to be signed by the commissioner and the composer.

5) The normal waiting time for a work could be anywhere from 8 months to a year.

6) Although the composer is interested in hearing ideas from the commissioner, final subject matter and artistic direction are generally in the hands of the composer.

7) After the composer completes the work, it will be sent to a publisher. The name and organization of the commissioner(s) will appear prominently on the title page of the score.

8) The composer has 3 different copyists who charge varying rates. These costs will be added into the final fee (usually around $500.)
